How to Take Care of Your Vision? Discover Good Habits to Reduce Eye Fatigue!
I often hear the question: “how can I take care of my vision?” and while answering, I smile to myself, taking stock of what I personally do for my eyes. However, taking care of our eyes, hygiene of work, and rest is very important, yet very simple. Learn a few principles that will make your eyes less tired. So, how can you take care of your vision?
Why Are My Eyes Tired?
Did you know that 6 extraocular muscles control eye movements? Additionally, the ciliary muscle is responsible for accommodation? We use them all day long, looking in different directions, performing what are called tracking and saccadic movements, and straining the accommodative muscle when looking closely. Our eyes are constantly in use, which is why they get tired.
Why do some people's eyes get tired faster than others (assuming a similar lifestyle)?
Most often because, in addition to normal activities, the eye muscles must cope and compensate for an uncorrected vision defect or some disorder in binocular vision or accommodation. I always compare this situation to walking all day with a 3kg backpack or without anything – it’s obvious that without a backpack, we are less tired at the end of the day. So why do we force our eyes to carry such a “backpack” with an uncorrected vision defect?
It’s just normal, everyday fatigue…
Not necessarily. Today’s world requires our eyes to constantly focus on close distances. In the morning, we read the newspaper or browse the Internet. At work, we read documents, work on the computer, mostly staying indoors. Driving a car, we are highly concentrated and strain our sight while also using air conditioning, which dries our eyes. In the evening, we “rest” by browsing the Internet, watching television, or playing on the X-box.
Throughout the day, our accommodation is tense because it is always more or less tense when looking at close distances. It only relaxes when we look really far away. The fatigue of our eyes always affects our overall tiredness. We don’t need to do physical work during the day to be tired, just 8 hours of work at the computer is enough…
How Much Time Do Your Eyes Really Rest…
I’m not only talking about sleep 😉 Although, when a person sleeps too little, the eyes also do not rest sufficiently well. To reduce eye fatigue, it is primarily necessary to limit the “working time” of the eyes, mainly close work (computer games, television, tablet apps). Get off one stop earlier when you ride the city bus and take a little walk. Take care of your children – take them outside every day. In summer, play football, in autumn, rake leaves – children love running in leaves, in winter, I suggest snowball fights, and in spring, a walk. Our eyes will thank us with better well-being, and by the way, we will nurture family relationships.
Good Habits - How to Take Care of Your Vision?
During close work, take breaks about every 20 minutes. During this time, look out the window for 2 minutes. Air the room at this time. Walk around, maybe stretch a bit…
Don’t need to watch TV? Turn off the television.
Can you limit the time spent in front of the computer? Do it.
Can you rollerblade? Do you like running? Walking? Maybe Nordic Walking sticks? The more movement outdoors, the better. Mainly for your eyes, but not only.
Remember, our eyes are relaxed outdoors because then we don’t use accommodation, and only then do our eyes truly rest
